With the 2023 tax season nearing its end, Pew Research Center analyzed IRS data to shed light on a poorly understood topic. Use Form 8960 to calculate the surtax. The American tax system manages to combine ubiquity, complexity and opacity. You must pay the surtax if you're a single or head-of-household taxpayer with modified adjusted gross income (AGI) over $200,000, a married couple filing a joint return with modified AGI over $250,000, or a married person filing a separate return with modified AGI over $125,000. (NII includes, among other things, taxable interest, dividends, gains, passive rents, annuities, and royalties.) There's an additional 3.8% surtax on net investment income (NII) that you might have to pay on top of the capital gains tax. Also, the rate doesn't apply to short-term gains. Instead, your ordinary tax rate will apply. So, if your ordinary income tax rate is lower, you won't have to pay that much. Once again, the 25% rate is a maximum rate. For most people, this only comes up if you sell rental property. The rest of your long-term gain is taxed at either the 0%, 15% or 20% rate. The taxable amount is known as "unrecaptured Section 1250 gain" (named after the tax code section covering gain from the sale or other disposition of certain depreciable real property). If you sell real estate for which you previously claimed a depreciation deduction, you may have to pay a capital gains tax of up to 25% on any unrecaptured depreciation. Capital Gains Tax Rate for Previously Deducted Depreciation The 28% rate doesn't apply to short-term capital gains from the sale of QSBS, either. However, for any gain that is not exempt from tax, a maximum capital gains tax rate of 28% applies.Īs with the 28% rate for collectibles, if your ordinary tax rate is below 28%, then that rate will apply to taxable QSBS gain. If you sell " qualified small business stock" (QSBS) that you held for at least five years, some or all of your gain may be tax-free. Capital Gains Tax Rate for Qualified Small Business Stock So, if you don't own a collectible for at least one year before selling it, you'll still be taxed on any gain at your ordinary tax rate (between 10% and 37%). The 28% limit doesn't apply to short-term capital gains. But if you're in a higher tax bracket (i.e., 32%, 35% or 37%), then the capital gains tax on your collectible gains is capped at 28%. If your ordinary tax rate is lower than 28%, then that rate will apply. ![]() Instead of a 20% maximum tax rate, long-term gains from the sale of collectibles can be hit with a capital gains tax as high as 28%. Without an adjustment to match the rise in inflation, more people would end up paying a higher rate in 2023 than they did for 2022. However, that's actually a good thing for taxpayers – especially for people with a stagnate income or an income that grows slower than the rate of inflation. Because of the high inflation we've seen lately, the 2022 to 2023 adjustments were larger than usual. The IRS has already released the 2023 thresholds, so you can start planning for 2023 capital asset sales now. The income thresholds for the long-term capital gains tax rates are adjusted each year for inflation. ![]() ![]() You have that ability to bring light to what some people may say, a dark subject area. ![]() And, part of that was the decision to go back to school, to get a degree in clinical psychology, just so that I can continue to write and talk about all of this stuff, but from like an even more informed point of view, And, then I started making stuff online, and as I just started kind of talking about my own journey with OCD, I realized that so many people resonated with that, that there wasn't necessarily as much content out there about just the day-to-day struggle of it all.Īnd so, over the last few years, I've really been shifting from more of just a narrative fiction screenwriter, author to I'm much more in the mental health space. I went to USC Film School for screenwriting degree. My initial intention with my career was to be a screenwriter. And, a lot of the mental health advocacy I try to do is aimed at, paying attention to what your kids are telling you, noticing changes in their behavior and, and not just saying like, Oh, well they're just acting up or they can't really have problems they're five.īecause when it's biological, it's real, and also a lot of times, kids that are experiencing potentially trauma that you're not aware of outside of the home that is causing things to happen. And so, my parents took it really seriously and I'm really glad that they did. For me, I had strep throat, which activated my OCD, it's called PANDAS. So some kids are just more biologically predisposed, so even if they're growing up in like a super happy healthy home. You know, so sometimes these kids are suffering and they're, you know, there's biological reasons for mental illness, as much as there's, psychological and cultural and social issues as well. And I talk about this a lot, but with children, there's this belief that like, Oh, what do you have to worry about? So, while I don't remember a lot of it, my parents sure do, and they, really stepped in and recognized immediately that something was really wrong and they got me the help that I needed. So, for me, I actually was diagnosed with OCD when I was four years old. So Could you talk to our listeners, particularly our grownup listeners a little bit? Īs a transducer of electricity into light, LEDs operate in reverse of photodiodes. LEDs usually need electronic support components to function, while an incandescent bulb can and usually does operate directly from an unregulated DC or AC power source. In contrast to LEDs, incandescent lamps can be made to intrinsically run at virtually any supply voltage, can utilize either AC or DC current interchangeably, and will provide steady illumination when powered by AC or pulsing DC even at a frequency as low as 50 Hz. In exchange for these generally favorable attributes, disadvantages of LEDs include electrical limitations to low voltage and generally to DC (not AC) power, inability to provide steady illumination from a pulsing DC or an AC electrical supply source, and lesser maximum operating temperature and storage temperature. LEDs have many advantages over incandescent light sources, including lower power consumption, longer lifetime, improved physical robustness, smaller size, and faster switching. LEDs have also given rise to new types of displays and sensors, while their high switching rates are useful in advanced communications technology with applications as diverse as aviation lighting, fairy lights, automotive headlamps, advertising, general lighting, traffic signals, camera flashes, lighted wallpaper, horticultural grow lights, and medical devices. Later developments produced LEDs available in visible, ultraviolet (UV), and infrared wavelengths, with high, low, or intermediate light output, for instance white LEDs suitable for room and outdoor area lighting. Early LEDs were often used as indicator lamps, replacing small incandescent bulbs, and in seven-segment displays. The first visible-light LEDs were of low intensity and limited to red. Infrared LEDs are used in remote-control circuits, such as those used with a wide variety of consumer electronics. Īppearing as practical electronic components in 1962, the earliest LEDs emitted low-intensity infrared (IR) light. White light is obtained by using multiple semiconductors or a layer of light-emitting phosphor on the semiconductor device. The color of the light (corresponding to the energy of the photons) is determined by the energy required for electrons to cross the band gap of the semiconductor. Electrons in the semiconductor recombine with electron holes, releasing energy in the form of photons.
